The following letter was received by Guilford Citizens from First Selectman Matt Hoey:

Good Afternoon, this is First Selectman, Matt Hoey

DPH reports 21 new confirmed and 13 probable cases this week. This continues the recent downward trend in new cases. For the State’s most recent 2-week data set, there were 1711 tests by Guilford residents, down over 200 since last week, with a 7.7% positivity rate, down from 9.7%, and, given the declines in the number of cases this week, should drop again next week.
DPH data shows that 70 individuals received their first dose and 35 their 2nd. Vaccines for the total population is up a point to 91% with a first dose and remains 84% with a second. For those eligible to receive the vaccine, 93% have received their first dose. 86% of those eligible have received the second dose, also flat from last week. The fully vaccinated rate for 5-11-year-olds held steady at 52%. There continues to be statewide concern over the reluctance to vaccinate children. Once again, 24% of our new cases were children under the age of 12 while representing only 12% of the town’s population. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paul Freeman, and I strongly urge parents of school-age children between 5-11 to get your children vaccinated.
With the legislature authorizing local level determination, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Freeman announced today that effective Monday, February 28, 2022, the students, faculty, and staff of Guilford Public Schools will not be required to wear a mask while in school buildings or on school grounds. This decision was made based on guidance from state and local health professionals, including the CT Department of Public Health and the State Department of Education. Students and staff who wish to continue to wear a mask may do so.
A federal order issued by the CDC requires that students continue wearing a mask on the school bus, both to and from school as well as to and from athletic and other school events.
The current mask mandate for Town buildings and offices will also be lifted on February 28th.
While we continue to have the lowest confirmed infection rate amongst our surrounding towns please follow the traditional protocols we used throughout the pandemic and I urge you to follow CDC guidance & wear masks indoors in public spaces, regardless of your vaccination status. Please honor the wishes of local businesses requiring masks.

Be safe, stay well and have a wonderful weekend.
